Muriel Leyfert
Sewist Spotlight: Meet Muriel
How long have you been sewing?
I first learned on a treadle machine when I was 9 years old.
How did you learn to sew?
Trial and error, just playing with the machine
What was the first thing you remember sewing?
I made my first real project when I was 11, it was a jumper and a blouse. I think I was able to wear it one time till it fell apart. I learned that you could take clothes apart and turn them sideways to get enough fabric to sew. When I entered the Military, I learned to adjust my uniform to fit and to sew patches on. I did sewing and alterations for many years as well as sew for my husband, children (3 girls) and myself.
What do you like to sew?
After my family was grown, I turned my sewing into a Doll Hospital business and making Original Sock Dolls. I dyed my socks and all embroidery was free hand. I gave all that up when I was introduced to quilting and that is where I have enjoyed creating for many years.
What kind of sewing machine do you have? Any other machines like serger, etc.
I have a Brother quilters machine (standard machine) and a Babylock serger.
How long have you been a Guild member?
I have been a Guild member since 2003 starting out with the South County Chainstitchers.
Best sewing tip for us?
The only tip I have is find what makes you happy and never stop creating!
